This blog documents the travels of 10 curators from North West England to Istanbul. 4 days, 8 exhibitions and 14 meetings. The original motivation for the trip was the 10th Istanbul Biennial Not Only Possible, But Also Necessary – Optimism in the Age of Global War where Hou Hanru’s curatorial ethos is entrepreneurial and innovative in its vision and manifestation. In addition to the Biennial we will meet the curatorial staff from other galleries and organisations, independent curators and artists as well as the British Council. It is an opportunity to extend our networks and to broaden our knowledge of the international contemporary art scene and the particular climate in which artists and organisations operate in Istanbul. This curatorial development trip has been initiated and organised in an independent capacity by Clarissa Corfe, Programme Manager at Castlefield Gallery. Joining her on the trip will be Ross Dalziel, Kathryn Dempsey, Jemma Egan, Patrick Fox, Karen Gaskill, Gregory Gurner, Hilary Jack, Ying Kwok and Andrew Lim. Travel, accommodation and subsistence has been funded by Arts Council, North West. With thanks to Kathryn Dempsey for her selection of Liverpool curators.
